Finding Balance in the Force

My favorite Star Wars™ film has always been The Empire Strikes Back™. But while the battle of Hoth will keep me glued to the screen for that second when the AT-ATs appear out of the snow, the film’s defining moments are on Dagobah, while Luke struggles and trains with Master Yoda.

Before that, the Force was just a word that Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader used, for a power whose glory days were long over. But on Dagobah, with Luke, we saw the Force differently; not as some simple trick that made Imperial Stormtroopers look the other way, but something greater. The Force™ is a living energy binding the galaxy as a whole. It is something that, in the hands of a master, could raise a lost X-Wing from the depths of a swamp. And after the cave where Luke faced his greatest fears, we understood the most important lesson for a Jedi: you can’t solve every problem with one stroke of your Lightsaber.

The Jedi Consular knows that lesson better than anyone. Trained in the arts of the Force, driven by curiosity and the search for knowledge, the Jedi Consular sees that through the Force, all things are connected.

As a Jedi Consular, your journey begins among the ruins and forests of Tython, still full of dangers and secrets after so many centuries. But the business of the Jedi Order is never confined to one world. You may find yourself inching through ancient ruins seeking proof of lost cultures, discovering and mastering forgotten Force techniques, planning an assault on an enemy base with Republic armies waiting on your unique insights, or even representing your order to a strange alien culture, whose first question is: “What’s a Jedi?”

And as your knowledge and experience grows, so does your reputation. The Jedi Council will entrust you with its most dangerous and delicate missions. Among the Sith, there will be whispers in the highest circles of a powerful new enemy. Maybe you’ll even get the chance to teach a new generation of Jedi, just as your master taught you.

But the Jedi Consular, more than any other Jedi, constantly walks a fine line. The Force has two sides; truly mastering it requires an understanding of both darkness and light. And a Jedi Consular’s natural curiosity can often lead him or her into trouble. Walking the balance between light and dark can give a Consular incredible power… but that’s when the treacherous thoughts begin creeping in. Don’t worry about falling to the dark side. You’re so smart and powerful, you can resist petty temptations. And even if you discovered some ancient secret that could make you stronger… surely you, with your superior intellect and understanding of the Force, know what’s best?

When developing the story for the Jedi Consular, these were themes we wanted to address – power and wisdom, how Jedi face the dark side, and how they work toward the ideals of the Republic. But the key element of the Consular’s story is mystery, using intelligence and courage to seek the truth. We wanted to capture the journey of Obi-Wan Kenobi – someone who begins with unusual insight and talent, but who is still growing into those powers, learning about the galaxy, and choosing what path to take in life.

For me, the challenge – and the fun – of writing the Jedi Consular is keeping a sense of balance between intelligence and arrogance, between what’s right and what could win the war against the Empire. A Jedi Consular must sometimes accept the grayer path, the less perfect choice. He or she must make the decisions the Republic can’t, in order to save it.

Will you delve into the greatest mysteries of the Force, to master abilities few Jedi ever dream of? Maybe you’ll be driven by a hunger for the past, to explore new horizons and reclaim long-forgotten lore for the Jedi Order. Or you could look to the future, rubbing shoulders with ambassadors and heads of state, and fighting alongside the Republic’s boldest generals.

Then again, perhaps you’ll seek power for yourself, use your wisdom to bend others to your will, and mercilessly destroy all threats to the Republic… even knowing what the cost of victory might be someday.

The choice is yours, Jedi Consular.

THIS IS EXCITING

The mythos of what is and isn't dark side has changed over the years. Back in the d6 system of the game, using the force offensively against someone as in the force push jedi in the prequel trilogy are so fond of using (though generally against droids, but not always), was just as darkside as using force lightning to jumpstart your cruiser. But where's the fun in playing a jedi if you can't have some "fun" with the force and still be a good guy:) Hopefully they'll have a full range of available force powers, including ones only seen in books and comics. Although most will still be dark side powers. But they could be those powers that "tempt" you:)

Thy i shall only follow the true road of a Jedi.
Shall i not fall to the dark side.
Cause there is no returning from that.

Do not you my dead friends follow the path i cannot follow.
If so. You made us enemies.

Some of the jedi knight use their lightsabers then the force and the Sith Lords use only the force.

Tue, 08/17/2010 - 03:32

ok now i dont know which to choose from now. I either want to be a SI or a Consular. If the Consular can learn some dark side force moves then i am prolly pick the Consular but Idk yet. And I wonder if your a jedi you can use a red saber cause in one of the previews the sith warrior picked up a jedi saber and was able to use it.

Thu, 09/02/2010 - 16:18

Yes, as a Jedi you can use a red lightsabre. :)

Wed, 08/25/2010 - 22:16

One can only assume that a jedi can indeed use a red saber, and one can draw the conclusion that jedi can learn sith abilities from that same video where they said that the main character gained dark side points, also making us believe a sith can become a jedi or vice versa, thus, you could possess your very own Gray Jedi Counselor

This is the class I've been leaning to. I'm also glad that the game seems to be moving away from the WOW model of Tank, healer, crowd control, DPS. 30 people against 1 monster is lame; 30 monsters against 1 jedi is epic. I love the tactics in the gameplay video. More please, I have a job and I'll gladly pay to play.

I'll join =D! I'm making a Jedi Consular.

Im looking forward to seeing the depth of the ingame stories and what powers has the creators really involved, is it all talk and speculation? Are there powers out there that are really lore and great? Have the creators really done their Job in their creations?

I will find out the depth of their so called force mysteries, and use it, for myself, my gain, my knowledge, my wisdom. Not yours!

Someones gotta have the job of the main healer..I agree that the Consular/Inquisitor will likely be the most effective in that role. Keep in mind though people that 8 class's is all they have decided to show us so far. That doesnt mean there will only be 8 class's to play. They dont wanna throw out all their chips at once. Im really interested to see what other races they have available also. Who wants to play a Wookie? heh heh heh

Mon, 08/02/2010 - 03:55

they said these were the final eight classes

It's funny though that being a healbot does not fit in with the image portrayed by this blog in the least.

Wonder where everything began to go wrong...

Sat, 07/17/2010 - 19:46

Imagine the possibilities if they had a Droid race as well... ooo... assasin droid... =)

Sat, 07/17/2010 - 19:15

i love this blog, it will be very interesting to explore the jedi classes, the unmatched lightsaber prowess combined with cool armour with the jedi knights and sith warriors or the awesome force powers of the inquisitor and consular. im very much looking forward to exploring the class abilities and (hopefully) rich storylines. also looking forward to having my own starship:)

Surely it will be possible to choose either to be the medic or a fighter alongside allies. I mean, as a Jedi, you can fight and stop a moment to heal, then continue to fight. It's not like only Jedi can heal, but troopers too with some med kits. Even a droid could be the medic on the field. Come on! The Republic will need Jedi to bring back peace and justice against those Sith. Furthermore, all should take part to the fight and not waiting behind to heal others in need. Anyhow, I'm pretty sure the way to play the game will be in the player's control.

Thu, 07/15/2010 - 15:43

You will be either of the following if you play a consular endgame seriously.
(high end progression based raiding)

a: ranged force (spell) based dps
b: melee/cc utility
c: a healbot/buffbot

C most definitively will define this class in endgame raid use I'll put my left nut on the line as a bet I'm right that this class will indeed get pigeonholed by serious raiders as a healer class. Regardless that is what the devs intended from watching the videos of what a consular actually does in game. Pick your poison, the same goes for a sith inquisitor.

I don't know... but I think class system is dead. SWTOR will lose much more then spirit of freedom if 8-class system will materialize. Sorry but trailer from E3 show us WoW in Lucas entourage.

p.s. sorry about my english

see that picture before you click on the video thats me right there

Tue, 07/06/2010 - 04:28

I'm sorry i don't wana sound mean. But if you have read or actually listened to any of the good starwars rpg's or book's or even watched the movie's you would learn that walking the gray path isn't just a Kotor 2 thing or even the constant struggle of being a jedi or a very force intuned consular it's constantly mentioned and depicted in pretty much everything that's in the Extended Universe it's what being a Jedi is all about.

Anyway I would like to say i look forward towards playing a Jedi Consular and much appreciate that a really good and mysterious story will be unraveling for them. I have always been fond of all BioWare games and think that as far as story goes you all are genius. Thank you very much for this i've been waiting for this game since before Kotor came out and I have faith that this game will be what i wanted in Galaxies.

Mon, 07/05/2010 - 19:35

This sounds a bit KOTOR2-influenced! Joy! :D

Oops..... Then file a complaient.

Tue, 07/06/2010 - 23:49

A Jedi Knight uses the force for defense, never attack.

A Jedi Knight seeks not glory, only knowledge.

I wonder if get to train other online players? Hmm, difficult it is to say at this time.

Tue, 06/29/2010 - 12:15

Ooh, healer class?

Sat, 07/10/2010 - 22:45

Kinda sounds like it. I bet each class is teared, could be support, healer, res, or damage? Depending on what schools you learn? I am pretty pumped.

Tue, 06/29/2010 - 02:08

I'm really looking forward to playing this class. It seems really fleshed out as far as it's relation to the force is concerned.

That said, I hope that they include the Yodaish abilities to absorb lightning and reflect it back...THAT would be awesome! I assume from the trailers that they do as the Heroine blocks the Sith's Saber with her palm...

As a former QA tester for Blizzard, I hope they have a good set of folks testing and looking for bugs. I'm sure they do. Star Wars has a very special place in my heart though, more so than WoW ever could in respect to a storyline.

Good looking job so far Bioware!

Mon, 06/28/2010 - 18:08

I'm looking for people to join my small group, I need a consular, a smuggler and soldiers.

Mon, 06/28/2010 - 02:19

I will play all classes for sure, but the jedi consular sounds like tons of fun! im excited to see what kind of choices we will have to make and what kinds of consequences those choices will bring!

The Force is with us.... Always..

Fri, 06/25/2010 - 21:44

Im defintly being this class but i want to weild 2 light sabers because i get double the crystals. The double blad is cool but you might as well use a sigle hilt because the only differnce is that you do a little extra damage. Unless they put some kind of speacail abilty to a doublebladed light saber like defects more bullets then it would be pointless
And question can I help the republic but still use dark side powers? I hope its not like kotor 1 and 2 where you if your good the bad side power arnt as good but whatever. Cant wait for this game!

Fri, 06/25/2010 - 20:32

i like the dual bladed lightsaber but i have to go jedi knight. but why does everybody wanna be a jedi so bad it makes me wanna pick bounty hunter or smuggler

Tue, 08/17/2010 - 03:30

i plan to explore the entirity of the sith classes before rolling jedi. BH is #1

Fri, 06/25/2010 - 21:47

Prob because the dont seem like they have lots of story. Like people want to know what happend to revan and the exile. Like why would a trooper or a bounty hunter care about a jedi?

Thu, 06/24/2010 - 21:59

Didn't the developers say in the early stages that you could be a sith inquisitor but start in the Jedi starting zones? Weaving and manipulating their masters to your own ends and finally revealing your true self when you please? What happened to that? I wanna be a SI but I wanna start in the goodie-two-shoes zones to sew havoc :P

Thu, 06/24/2010 - 09:47

What i don't like about this images is that the Consular has a blue blade, that's a Knight color, though I'm sure you'll get to choose you'r blade's color.(right? :P)

Thu, 06/24/2010 - 09:44

I will definetly play as a Jedi Consular. I think they have a more important role than Jedi Knight. Knights mostly lead armies or fight the Republic's enemies, though Consulars have greater wisdom and intelligence and seek the mysteries of the Force while also serving as ambassadors, discovering ancient relics, places and so on...I also hope you'll have the options to train Padawans, that'll be really cool!(my oppinion)and that at the specialization you'll have to choose from either being a healer with less combat moves or a combat spec with less healing(I would choose this).

Fri, 06/25/2010 - 21:51

i agree but not the jedi training part that would be boring. Mabey like have a apprentic. Similar the obi wan and anikian. Mabey if you dont do a god job then he or shewill turn on you.

Thu, 06/24/2010 - 03:31

I gotta say, the Consular sounds fun to play, but as an Avid Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2 lover I knew most of the stuff I read, still there is one simple fact about the Consular, the force is the most powerful.....well...force in the star wars universe, although not indefinitely the best class, the Consular has the highest potential for power. Another thing being a KOTOR fan has brought me while reading the class descriptions is a sad feeling and a hopeful question. The Jedi Knight and Consular both look great, but what about the Sentinel? I love having the true balance between Lightsaber skill and Force Power.

Wed, 06/23/2010 - 11:06

Nice blog. I've always been interested in the Consular and this just makes me even more interested.

Sun, 06/27/2010 - 13:46

The sentinel will prob come along with an expansion.

Wed, 06/23/2010 - 02:09

Woah. I had absolutely no intention of even giving the Consular some consideration. Reading this blog has just made my class choice that much more difficult. Curse you, Bioware!

Thu, 07/15/2010 - 13:30

Why must they give us so many options!! My head is going to explode with all of the choice!

Sun, 06/20/2010 - 06:26

I will start crying so f***ing bad if this game comes out when I'm in the middle of a school term T_T

Thu, 06/17/2010 - 21:43

With battling, the common tasks involve
1- who directly fights
2- who keeps the fighter alive
3- who increases the general strength of the group
4- who severely damages the enemy

this is for battles where everyone has massive health.
if the game is built more around skill, where being high level does not grant near immunity to lower levels, then those can change easily.

Star Wars has long been, for me, a universe where skill matters more than reputation, and reputation is only for the middle class. The greatest are unknown to the general population, and the weakest are never worth the time of day.

With force powers, if all we do is swing push and pull levels around, heal, and debilitate, persuade, in other words only use variations of powers seen in the movies, then what the point? the force is greater than a battle swing vote. Are there more developers with ideas like Bastila's Battle Meditation, only some more common, and some even more rare?

Thu, 06/17/2010 - 09:18

Guy! That is so cool. What I got from reading that is there mostly about mastering the Force instead of a lightsaber. That is pretty cool, but I think I would rather be the best at killing peeps with saber instead of using the force to make someone jump of a cliff. Both cool, but the saber make you more of a BAMF.

Sun, 06/13/2010 - 13:30

Being a jedi consular is awesome. I can't wait to play this game.
