Let’s start this blog off with an introduction. My name is Drew Karpyshyn. I was the lead writer on the original Star Wars™: Knights of the Old Republic™ game, as well as the author of several Star Wars™ novels. And I’m here to tell you about the Jedi Knight character class.
Now, anyone who’s familiar with my novels Darth Bane: Path of Destruction, Darth Bane: Rule of Two and the upcoming Darth Bane: Dynasty of Evil might be surprised to hear I’m working on the Jedi Knight class. But I was excited to step away from the dark side so I could embrace the challenge of writing the “good guy”. (Or “girl,” of course.)
And let’s be honest: the Jedi Knight is *the* iconic character in this universe. Nothing says Star Wars like a brown-robed figure brandishing a shimmering energy blade of righteous destruction. The Jedi Knight is the classic take-charge, smite-evil, save-the-girl action hero. We’re all familiar with Luke Skywalker, of course. But he wasn’t the only lightsaber wielding champion of virtue to flip, spin and somersault his way across the big screen. Young Obi-Wan Kenobi and Mace Windu both proved you can kick ass and take names while still valiantly battling to uphold the ideals of the Jedi Code.
Ah, the Jedi Code. That’s where things get interesting, isn’t it? Because the Jedi are more than just unstoppable Force warriors. They’re symbols; they embody an ideal. The Code dictates that a Jedi’s actions must be driven by logic and reason. There is no emotion, there is peace.
Nice theory. In practice, however, it’s never that simple. Jedi Knights strive for mental, physical and spiritual perfection, but they’re still human. (Well, not just human, but you know what I mean.) They’re not infallible, and meting out justice in a dangerous galaxy sometimes means getting your hands dirty.
You see, combat is never a problem for the Jedi Knight. Acrobatic lightsaber moves, unleashing devastating Force attacks and back-round kicking opponents in the face are second nature. But what happens when a sworn enemy surrenders and begs you for mercy? You *know* letting him live is going to come back and bite you. Unfortunately, slicing an unarmed opponent in half sort of violates everything the Jedi stand for. So, do you let him live? Or do you bend the rules – just this once – for the greater good?
Suppose you don’t kill him. What if he offers you power in exchange for letting him go free? You can use that power for good. Make the galaxy a better place. The Jedi Council might disapprove, but they’re not out here on the front lines fighting for their lives day in and day out, are they?
Maybe that’s what the Jedi need. Someone with a bit more of an edge. Someone willing to push the limits. Someone willing to cross the lines and battle the Sith on their own terms.
Only once you start down that path, it’s sometimes hard to turn back. Maybe the true heroes are the ones who resist the easy way out. Maybe the Code is what gives the Jedi their enduring strength. Maybe honoring its tenets under all circumstances is the only way to achieve ultimate victory over the dark side.
But the path of uncompromising virtue is a hard road. Take the whole “Jedi must avoid emotional attachments” thing. Love, romance – the Council has decreed these feelings must be denied. Yet after the heat of battle, is it so wrong to seek comfort in the arms of another? Is it better to live a life of solitude and loneliness, or to admit your true feelings and keep your secret affair hidden from those who would pass unfair judgment?
These are the kinds of questions you will face when you play the Jedi Knight. The galaxy needs a savior. The light side needs a champion. What kind will you be? Are you a paragon of virtue; the shining example the Council holds up to show the rest of the galaxy? Or are you a renegade, defying both Code and the Council as you purge Sith from the galaxy?
Whichever path you choose, just be sure to keep your lightsaber handy. I have a feeling you’re going to need it.

Tempting as drew is in charge but did they give him the light side role to steer away his millions of fans from going sith?? |
fear off to many darkside users mwahhh! |
I agree. The Darth Bane trilogy was an awesome insight into the Sith view of the Force, and Drew did a great job. It was the book that got me reading the SW books all over again! Alas, he has gone over to the light. But jedi can go dark, no? He could create a delicious little twist to the jedi knight storyline if you want to go down the self-destructive path! |
I will be a Jedi knight that respects the councils decisions. There called jedi masters for a reason. |
I'm choosing jedi warrior just because drew is writing their history. |
my jedi knight will follow orders but he will follow his heart at the same time and gain enough power to defeat the empire |
Cool story, bro. |
Drew Karpyshyn writing the Jedi Knight storyline? Well that settles my main character choice. (I just love the writing of KOTOR, ME and especially the ME books) |

Its not the Jedi way to bottle up there emotion, instead you control them, use them with good jugdement. The same goes for love and relationships. |
Who cares about the code when your wiping out the sith. I'll only spare one if they teach me force lightning. GURILA WARFAR!!!!! |
I feel like he's just stomping the code.. |
Some what i agree.. Guess we wont understand the full meaning until launch. |

I am Jedi Knight Nazirus Darkonis, Member of the Republic Sovereighty Guild. as a result The Galaxy is in chaos and trying to restore itself to it former glory, in order to do this, we need the Republic's Elite to join The sovereighty. We are trying to use all aspects of SWTOR. The call to Battle is Here, PM and Friend me if you want to join. For the Republic! |
Take your pretty talk of "experience all aspects of the game" to another forum, nutcase. The game hasn't even come out yet, so just dig up some more patience and abide until then. |
i really do hope we will have a lot of jedi knights. but when does this game come out? |
dont worry there will be plenty of jedi and sith but no troopers or imperial agents. i have no idea when it comes out though. |
i think this game comes out 4/1/2010 but idk. im going to be a trooper for sure i just hope i find a good Jedi to help me out when ever a sith attacks me. a trooper with a jedi is going to be the best!! |
I thought about whether to be the jedi who sticks to the code. or break away and be the exile type... but as i was thinking about this i thought... why not be in between both? see i think breaking away from the code and going out of the way to destroy the sith is going to far and dishonors the way of the jedi... but then sticking to the code so tightly is sometimes a handicap... we need good people with good intentions that will do the right thing, but yet maybe do them in a different more efficient way... Qui-Gon i think a pretty good example. He was determined on good things, and still stuck to the code... but he bent it to his way of doing things. He didnt exactly break the code, but he wasn't exactly sticking to it fully... I feel that i will be a jedi who Honors the code and the jedi council... but might bend it, just a little, to make sure that some things get done. |
Either you stick with the code for good. or not at all. There is no partial way to do it. it all or nothing. If you would be an real Jedi. You would not even consider about not sticking entirely with the code. I shall not step away from the way of code. |

Don't forget in trying to walk the middle Quigon also brought about the anihilation of his entire order by the hands of Darth Vader had he obeyed the wisdom of the council it might never have happened. Just because you do not agree with the council does not mean they are wrong, in most cases you just lack the experience and understanding that they do. Pride is a path to the dark side and the road to hell is paved with good intentions, the result of your actions hold the true answers. |
i think that the correct term is jedi guardian because a jedi knight refers to the jedi order as a whole. |
maybe but darth vader did in the end bring balance to the force by killin darth sidus. but i believe that a jedi can walk the middle and still serve the republic |
I think I will choose the jedi knight. I might follow the council but "bend" a few rules or orders. because sometimes you have to do things the jedi council tells you not to do. |
Ugh, Wonderful Article, Makes me want to sink my teeth into the Jedi Class and experience this story, Like no joke. |
I LOVE that bioware is giving us options to follow the jedi code, or go on your own like the exile, and even have love affairs? Makes this class sound very fun |
I am glad this storyline is in safehands!! I cannot wait! =-) |
I am totally agree with you. |
What a lot of you seem to not understand is that CHOICES HAVE CONSEQUENCES. You can choose to be an outlaw/Gray Jedi/Dark Jedi, but the COUNCIL WILL NOT LIKE/ACCEPT YOU. You can't disobey orders and waltz into the Grand Council Chamber liek nothign happened. BUT the Republic regiment you saved by disobeying orders might love you and follow you. Alternately, if you do everything the Council says, you may become a Master. Think before yelling about things, and we'll all get along XD. Qui-gon FTW, BTW, bending teh rules without breaking them...and nothing the Council can do about it. Off topic, if I roll a Knight, you'll see me as Anaya Starrunner XD. |
Agh, sorry about the spelling on a few of those words. Was typing kinda fast =P. |
long live the empire!! and may the republic fall |
i love it that you can go rogue as jedi because what fun if the jedi cant folow temptaion no-one is perfect |
There is no emotion, there is peace. Remember these words when you roll your Knight |
great this is just what we need, a bunch of people rolling Jedi just so they can defy the council and go against everything the Jedi stand for, just so they can be different and be 'rebels'. What's worse is that this article is almost encouraging it. If you wan't to be the guy who gets the girl and plays by his own rules, if you wan't to slaughter every enemy in your path roll a goddam Sith because none of these things are what make up a Jedi. Don't get me wrong, I like the idea that you can choose your path, but it is just the fact that everyone is being encouraged to become a grey Jedi that is just stupid. What's the point in having Jedi if all of them just defy the council and do whatever they want? |
I totally agree with you. If a mass of peoples just want to be grey-jedis. They should just make a Sith. REAL JEDI STICKS TO THE CODE NO MATTER WHAT ! All you grey-jedis just bring shame and misfortune upon all jedis. |

It has been said that Yoda and Obi-One are the Consular archetype. But here its said its Mace Windu and Obi-one so, is Obi-One just that bad a** or which one is he? Apart from that Go Republic! |
OK... A jedi knight in the movies is a ranking in the jedi order it goes, apprentice, padawan, jedi knight, and jedi master. So just to clarify Obi-Wan was talking about his rank, even though really by the end of the clone wars he was jedi master one the jedi council. Also Obi-Wan was in the middle of Counselor and being a combative jedi knight or Jedi Guardian. Which is the actual term for a combative jedi and will proably be a Jedi Knight sub-class. |
Obi-Wan is a jedi knight. Consulars are more diplomatic and try to avoid confrontation if possible. Obi-Wan is more combative. He actually even says he is a knight in A New Hope. |
cant wait to be a jedi and rescue this one hot girl .... and then PWN THOSE noobed sith ....and then become a slave drone for the hot girl... thats my jedi dreamm hohohoho |
I'm shamed that someone like you dare to call him self a jedi. |
xD |
This is really really annoying... he's describing Annakin - there's no Jedi Knight that doesn't follow what the council wishes unless they're going down the dark path and potentially want to become dark Jedi... This is a really freaking annoying plot manipulating mechanic being thrust upon us and it doesn't sit right with anyone that knows that there are, Jedi Knight and Dark Jedi/Sith. The two classes for Jedi is offensive. Be true to the lore. People playing a Jedi that regard the Council's code, rules and commands as optional are not freakin' Jedi. Period. I HATE that there are two types of Jedi and this just pisses me off to no end that we're being treated like sheep just so that they can have another class to chose for their mmo. They're treating us like sheep. This just annoys me to no end. |
How blind you are. The choices of being lightsided, grey or darksided in WHATEVER class you choose is just awesome, yet you whine. Personally, I'm looking forward to play as a DS JK - Fallen Jedi appeals more to me than Sith that have been evil from birth. :) |
we have to remember that Qui-Gon Jinn was seen as a rebel jedi. but when u see him do you think of him as a dark jedi/ sith? Every action has a consequence. the question is will you take the easy action which may lead to the dark side/ follow the orders of the council to the letter? or be a Qui-Gon and see there is another way that the council dont know everything and so dont have all the answers. although if we go deep enough we can blame Qui-Gon for Vader so....my point might be worthless :p |
I think you're wrong. I don't know about you, but I didn't read that article as saying, "disobey the Counsel". I read it as "the Council doesn't know what it's like on the frontline". And if you think all Jedi follow the Council...correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Count Dooku a Jedi once? Jedi fall to the dark side all the time. |
