At the TOR booth, the team took E3ers through the first live demo featuring a closer look at the game’s newly revealed class, the Smuggler, as well as the combat, flashpoint, cover, and multiplayer dialogue systems.
Highlighted features from the demo:
- TOR will be the first fully voiced MMO – Every playable character (male and female) and every non-playable character in the game will be brought to life by voice actors - resulting in several thousand speaking roles and hundreds of thousands of recorded lines of dialogue! This gives players a compelling and immersive story telling experience.
- Choice matters – Story drives choice, and choice drives action. Critical choices impact the outcome of your story dramatically. In the demo of an Imperial Flashpoint, attendees had to decide whether to kill an Imperial Captain who disobeyed a direct order, or to spare the Captain’s life. Depending on the choice, the TOR demo went in two different directions, each group seeing unique areas and content. Explore the press write ups below to find out what each path was like.
- Meet the Smuggler – Blast, bargain, and charm your way through the war-torn planet of Ord Mantell. Inspired by Han Solo, the Smuggler can unleash a flurry of bolts from his blaster or dodge a patrolling group of Separatist soldiers all while hijacking enemy contraband.
- Cover System - The first cover system of this type in an MMO! The demo team showed off the cover system for the Smuggler. Gain a tactical advantage by taking cover behind various objects (trees, rocks, buildings, etc.). When in cover, characters can switch to other cover points and also have access to special abilities.
- Unique class stories – Each class story is exclusive and storylines are also specific to each allegiance. For example: the storyline for a Smuggler (a Republic Class) is 100% different from the Bounty Hunter story (a Sith Empire class). You won’t share any content or missions.
- Multiplayer dialogue system – Another MMO first! E3ers got a preview at a new multiplayer dialogue system that allows players to engage in the storyline choices together. This creates a highly interactive and immersive gaming experience.
- Additional TOR features - The TOR team would like fans to know that Star Wars: The Old Republic is a massively multiplayer online game with all the features that players can expect from a MMO.
The Development Teams at BioWare and LucasArts would like to thank the press, fans and community for all of their support. We plan to have even more new and exciting updates for you as we progress on our journey of creating Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Wow i watched and read every single one of these and they all had great news about this game. I only wish I could see the gameplay that you showed to some people there. |
when does this game come out |

when does this game come out |
cannot wait to play this game, the trailer looked awesome and if anyone is looking for a good darkside guild then take a look at: www.untamed.co.nr |
That was a load of crap, it would be more likely that it was SOE vs Blizzard. |
Wow I can't wait for the cinematic experience |
Niether can I ! |
i hope this doesn't begin like SWG. after waiting 8 hours for it to download you get to be rescued by han solo whether you want to be rebellion or not. then you have to do every quest on tansari point station b4 you can leave. you spend HOURS being han solos slave b4 you can choose quests freely. and that's like half the game. |
I totally agree with you, that was miserable |
note this won best PC game awards so it won't be on 360. p.s it's been confirmed there will be pvp. p.p.s bioware is trying to make no class real overpowered so don't worry. |
The force shall free me with this game xD xD xD |
Man, I can't wait till this game gets here! |
This has completely NOTHING to do with "Star Wars: The Old Republic", but I herd that they were making 6 more Star Wars films... I don't believe them... But It may be true. They said Thats they would start in 2015 and finish in 2021... That seams a little late to start. For something that has to do with "Star Wars: The Old Republic", it's coming out in 2010, I believe... But you guys probably already knew that. |
where did you hear that? |
I just don't get why Lucas isn't making another, and as cynical as it may seem; while the original cast is still alive.. They could be in it, just centering about someone else? |
2010 too long........................ :( |
hm, i see what you mean. but BioWare could see the error of their ways and change to neutral start characters |
agreed. |
All I can say as a kotor fan, that, I don't feel very comfortable with the class forced allegience thing. From what I've read, if you're a smuggler, then you're forced to do republic stuff, and if you're a bounty hunter you're forced to do imperial stuff. From my experiences in kotor, I always knew that what ever side I was allying at the time, I could always change and switch over. To me, I would love it if they changed it so that you're average smuggler didn't have to be tied to the republic war effort. It would be great if you were supposed to be republic, but in an instance where the republic is weak, you turn on them and sack their ships and goods for the Empire's money. All I'm saying is I want be able to BE light or dark at my whim. |
I agree with you completely. But even under the description, it states that the bounty hunter class has been known to run missions for the republic. So I think you may start in a certain allegiance, then you can work it either way. So where KOTOR started you neutral and you increased, this may start you on one side, then you decide where to push it from there. |
yea i agree with u...but then again....u CAN make evil choices even if you are with the republic right? so maybe if u become evil enough, u will be forced to change sides, and visa versa. |
I hope you can play as a droid! |
I completely agree with ya naveR, I think that Smuggler and Bounty Hunter imply freelancing, this game will be cool regardless, but a lot of MMO's have classes on both sides. Even if they dont release it at launch the class may be available for the other side later on in a patch or something. A typical MMO dynamic is that they improve with time, unless they dont pay attention and do something opposite fans interests but Bioware is a fantastic company for gaming. |
Man the hype is building and so is the excitement. I wish I could see what the demo looked like. |
Does anyone know if TOR will available to mac users? |
Even if they don't do a Mac version, just use Boot Camp. |

YEAH and Why is not WoW on xbox?!!! |
wow ive read a lot of comments/replies on this site and ive played worldofwarcraft so ive seen "l33t speak" as its called and this comment just hurt my head to read. also i doubt the game will come out on Xbox 360 because its coming out on the personal computer and lets face it a keyboard with 30 odd buttons and a mouse means you have a lot more control then the Xbox 360 controler can offer. |
What did you say? |
Simple answer: No. It's not coming out for 360. |
jacobs Right... WTF is up with the point system??? |
ok check out this link. http://g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/696137/Star-Wars-The-Old-Republic-Prev... he was one of the lucky people to test play at the show. "Control-wise, Republic works much like other MMOs, with you using the “W," "A,” “S,” and “D” or arrow buttons to move, and the number keys to initiate attacks that correspond to the numbered icons along the bottom of the screen. Except that when you play as a Sith, as I did, doing simple melee attacks with your lightsaber builds up your Action Points, which you can use to do special attacks. So, for example, after attacking some guys a couple times with some quick jabs of the “1” key, I was able to stun everyone around me with a “5.” Or maybe a “4.” It happened kind of fast. All I know is everyone stopped hitting me long enough for me to slice ’em up." melee attacks to builds up "Action Points" this means no Force bar or force points u must Attack to be able to use the Force??? does this bother any one besides me or am i reading it wrong? i thought the Force was innate? yes it weakens u when you use the stronger force powers but, attack to use them seems... Dumb for a lack of a better word. I for one thought this was a take off from the KoToR games, not some morphed Fighting game with Star Wars Story, power cool off times or point cost from a regenerating Force pool, ok i can come to terms with that in game, as in regaining strength. I hope that if other people do not like this "Action Point System" they speak up. so that it might be addressed. thank you. |
I saw a preview in PCG. From they were saying, the mechanic operates like the rogue in WoW - some moves give you "combo points" and that lets you use "finishing moves", which effects vary depending on how many combo points you have stacked. For example, you have "stabbity" which is a basic attack, and "STAB!!!" which is a finishing move. STAB!!! may say "Stuns the target for 1 second per combo point". Yes, that example was totally made up, but hopefully it illustrates the mechanic for you. |
They have to make the game fair, yes they need to keep it as similar to star wars as possible but at the end of the day its the gameplay that makes a game so their gonna have to balance out the classes so its fun for all and it gives a challenge to the player as well, I think it would be a bit boring if you could just choke someone straight off with absolutely no resistance. |
i agree with jedichampion the sith are very aggressive in their fighting style and it makes sense that they would get to use their more powerful attacks through using lesser ones kind of like that sith lord in the "deceived" trailer they released he did a bunch of lesser attacks on that jedi guy and then used a finishing move to kill him. |
I think it's more of a stack system, rather than an "AP" system. That's the way I read it anyway, you have some powers you can use at will, others require you to be active in combat, and performing basic attacks to fuel. |
stupid blocker lol, a$$ |
Alright, i hope you can form guilds, if you can im gonna make a mandalorian one, dark side of course lol, BH's and Soldiers of the classes out now...hey anyone know about the release? i heard end of 2009, The graphics seem pretty good, it is a tad cartoony but, its much more realistic than WoW, I use to play WoW, but im glad a better star wars mmo is coming out, galaxies, i could never get into, and with the all the choices, the fourth pillar, no offense to the WoW fans, im one too, but Blizzard will be wiping SWTOR's ***** for a living. |
I dont think ToR will be out in the end of 2009 but im sure they will be done half way through(or the end) of 2010, they still have much to do (classes, story, planets, instance ETC) I also play WoW and i agree with you, This might be the only game that can compete with Blizzard May The Force Be With You. |
Well the game is certainly on a very well start ! |
damn, look at all the awards, and the game isn't even out yet:P |
