What Species? | 08.07.2009 , 05:26 AM
Please vote HERE

Before you vote please take time to look through the list below and make an informed decision.

This is a comprehensive list but may need revision - please add your comments below with a reason why a species should be included or excluded.

Before you ask - Mando'ade are not a species, at best a near human race (Taung) or an adopted culture.
  • HeroEngine illustrating character development including multiple limbs and morphing technology...
  • SWToR Station has some interesting species info HERE Click the half US half UK flag for English text.
  • ToROnline podcast including debate on player species can be found in Episode 2
I would like to make this Poll very popular and therefore useful to Bioware developers - this is an opportunity to tell them what we want for the game and perhaps influence the options available....

An interesting and detailed discussion What are the iconic "Old Republic" Era Races? by fodigg

Another popular species debate thread includes Tal-N's
Excellent info on existing playable races!

This thread by The Grand Nagus discusses the Should droids be a playable "race" issue.

Some popular articles on the "species" subject

Darth Hater: We have been told that players have the option of making their characters a non-human species. Will all players be voiced in “galactic basic”, be it English, French, or German, or will some be able to speak in an alien language, similar to Jory in the Bounty Hunter demo?

Will Beckman: The players will have the option of creating non-human player characters. However all of the player characters will speak basic as much of the entertainment in the conversations comes from the player character responses.

Darth Hater: Speaking of alien languages, some species in Knight of the Old Republic had a limited number of voiceover clips that tended to repeat for different lines of dialogue. Will we see something similar to this in The Old Republic, or is unique voiceover work being done for each species?

Will Beckman: The Non player character alien dialog will get a complete overhaul with lots more alien languages and variety. Along with Huttese we are creating scripts for many other languages with more variation. The alien language effort alone is bigger than the voice-over for any LucasArts game we’ve ever done, and we’ve done some big voice-over games.

you might have to consider the factors of alien language, because ithorians just cannot speak basic, neither can selkath and many others. (unless they just use the audio files from KOtoR games.
because i posted, this forum is worth money

Actually Ithorians CAN speak basic........in fact they can speak in stereo..!
Their own language was incredibly beautiful, yet difficult to learn, as the Ithorians had twin mouths on opposite sides of their necks. Fortunately, they could speak Basic, albeit with a strange accent. Each Ithorian herd was presided over by a Force-sensitive individual who served as both a priest and healer.
The native language of the Selkath was Selkatha, which despite its gurgling sound, could be learned by non-Selkath such as Revan and Dreddon.

I think it's fair to assume if Humans and Hutt can speak Selkatha then why can Selkath not speak a form of "gurgling basic"....?

I think this gives a VO sound engineer a great deal of scope to use stereo effects for Ithorian and "aquatic bubbling" effects for Selkath
