This is an article about SWTOR, published in the german magazine "Computer Bild Spiele" issue 6/2009. It is obvious that the interview with Daniel Erickson and Damion Schubert was taken in english, than translated into german, and now I'm translating it back in english. It is short article, but has some insights on the classes and the combat system in TOR. Enjoy.

May The Force Be With You

Almost everyone knows the story about Luke Skywalker, the Jedi knights and the evil Darth Vader from a galaxy far away. Lucas Arts and Bioware are developing around the story before that time, an epic online game in the Star Wars universe: "The Old Republic" (TOR). COMPUTER BILD GAMES (translates as Computer Image - Games) talked exclusively with the lead author of the game Daniel Erickson, and with Damion Schubert (lead combat designer) about this exciting project:

CBS: What is TOR all about?
Daniel: With TOR we bring big cinema and classical RPG together. The events take place 3500 years before the rise of Darth Vader. There are two big factions: The Sith Empire attacks the Galactic Republic and brings the galaxy into chaos. The special in TOR will be, that based on your actions a story will develop tailored for you. Ethics are very important. It is up to you, if you act noble and wise or you move towards the dark side of the force.

CBS: What classes will be there?
Daniel: Trooper, Smuggler and Bounty Hunter were confirmed up to this date. Jedi, Sith and more are on board too.

CBS: How is the combat?
Damion: The combat should look like in a modern action game, but under the hood it will be a RPG. We are developing now the working together of combos, tactical decisions and skills. It is important for us, that every character feels in the battle as it is expected from it.

CBS: Will there be any dungeons?
Damion: The so called flashpoints in TOR are equal to dungeons. For instance there is better loot for bigger challenges. When a group makes some decisions, they have to live with the consequences in the game.

This is the whole article. I'm not responsible for the magazine's translation from english into german, but my translation from german into english is acurate as possible. And remember (as someone said) - the translations are like the women, the beatiful are not true, and the true are not beatiful. Translators always balance in between. Oh, and there is a scan of the magazine's page:

Sounds good, interesting they said that smuggler is confirmed. We'll have to see what happens on the site.

Reminscence, a short film which I wrote the script for. | Praise be Muzchuk and Dahlberg!

Yeah, this is the reason I translated it. The issue is for June 2009, but it is a practice to print monthly magazines somewhere the month before.
And there are two other interesting things - they are talking about combos in the combat system, and they call their dungeons/instances - flashpoints.

Flashpoint is really stupid imo. "We have to use flashpoint cause blizzard already bought rights to instance." =p

They are technically called Dungeons in WoW. (For example, in the LFG pane you choose Dungeon, Heroic Dungeon, etc.) Everyone has just come to refer to them generically as instances.

Obviously "dungeon" wouldn't fit a scifi setting too well.
